This page is filled with pictures and info on my pet turtles "Fred" and
"Barney". They are both Southern Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta dorsalis).
Fred was captive bred and born in 1999. Barney was captive bred and born in
2000. Fred has an orange strip on his back and Barney has a yellow strip. They
both eat out of my hand and always go crazy when I go near their tank. They are
kept in a 75 gallon aquarium with lots of fish. They have a basking spot with a
spot light in one corner of the tank. Both turtles are still small but not
nearly as small as when I first got them. These turtles usually don't grow more
than 6".

A HOW-TO for the Hibernation of A Turtle
based on my experience results may vary
Make sure your turtle is in full health before attempting to place him or her into hibernation. If you notice your turtle not eating as much and not as active before and its between fall and early winter then your turtle may need to hibernate. Take the turtle out of the tank and have another tank set up with dirt and moss. If the turtle digs himself or herself a hole or just buries himself or herself in the moss and doesn't move around too much then bring the tank to a cooler place (like the basement) and keep it their for a few months checking on the turtle regularly. Do not feed the turtle while he or she is hibernating. The turtle will begin to awaken as the days get longer or the temp gets warmer. Slowly get the turtle used to a warmer temperature and try to feed him or her. When he or she is looking good then you may place him or her back into its original home.
